Five stars !!!
Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. It's a beautifully printed coffee-table book. Each page reprodcues one photo, at a scale large enough for lots of detail to come through. No text, just a beautiful young woman. Ommer presents a variety of faces and figures, many in settings that just emphasize the young woman's charm. The collection represents much of the variety in East Asian beauty, and gives good representation to the slim, elegant bust so distinctive to this population. As much as I like these photos, I found two things to wish for. First is that Ommer could have represented more of Asia in this collection - India is Asia, and is home to a half-billion samples of feminine beauty, none of which appeared here. Second was the way poses tended towards a sameness. They invariably captured the face, and usually the bust and torso. The whole woman has hips and legs, too, that complete the graceful curve of a female figure. These were under-represented by the 3/4 length portrait format that Ommer favors. And, a minor point, lack of titles and even page numbers makes it hard to discuss specific images. It's a lovely collection, and a complement to other collections that favor European features and figures. It could have been more, though.//wiredweird
I got hold of this book after browsing Ommer's "Black Ladies", which I was very much impressed with. Unfortunately, this volume did not live up to it's predecessor. The one thing ostensibly missing in these photographs was the sense of the individuality of every woman that was such a powerful presence in the former book. The photographs in this book seemed to me to be little more than soft porn . . . there was very little of the personality of the model that seemed to come through these very stylized photos. The emphasis on icy, remote sexuality devoid of warmth seemed the antithesis of what I had expected based upon "Black Ladies, which seemed to portray sexuality as only one part of a whole person and not the sole reason for the viewer's interest". The models almost all had these vague, stilted expressions on their faces that seemed totally bereft of character. A teasing coyness and mechanical pseudo-eroticism rather than organicism seemed the emphasis here. The artificiality was not avoidable -- it all looked as though the photographer and designer was trying to dupe libidinous males with raw sex rather than doing genuine art that would appeal to everyone. Rather than emphasising the individual, traditional manners of protraying oriental women were employed . . . the shy, innocent childlike seductress, oozing charm from very pore but with little or no sense of personhood, a mere toy for male lust. The models seemed little more than a series of wax mannekin-like figures employed mainly to inflame lust than to evoke any sort of deeper, haunting emotions in the viewer. Here there was nothing but glazed, indifferent eyes and a sense of detachment that made the models appear very remote, invulnerable, and slightly less than human. Few smiles, little ocular expression, dead countenances . . . these models did not seem to be caught with their emotional walls down, but seemed to know that the purpose of this book was to promote empty eroticism. Their countenances were all tabulae rasae. All of the models are young and thin (a problem that his previous collections have also suffered from -- as though only nubile youngsters can be considered worthy of artistic ends. Very few of the pictures in this collection made me think, "Who is this person I am looking at? What is she thinking?" and so on. Very few of the poses seemed natural in the least, and one was acutely aware in almost every instance that the models were "posing", which takes away from the sense of spontaneity that the best photographers manage to capture. Several of the photographs were almost absurd in their allusions to a cheap, dead, commercial sexuality. The colour red is emphasised throughout the book as a symbol of wanton eroticism and nearly all of the models are shown with nipples completely erect as though they were well on their way to climax already -- these ladies have no life and no purpose apart from their sexual uses and sexuality; there is just nothing else there. The women here are dead objects of lust, not real people; they are machines, not humans. A cheap attempt to capitalise on his previous book's success by objectifying "exotic" women. Also, "asian" in this collection means solely "mongoloid" and does not, for some reason, apply to mid-eastern, Indic, or any other ethnicity other than that of the Chinese-Japanese type (possibly because they have not traditional been objects of the western objectification as much as the "Madama Butterfly's" have). A big dissapointment -- Ommer could have done much better.
As a semi photographer and a fan of female forms, this book completely satisfied me pages after pages. Mr. Ommer has done it again (see his work in Black Ladies) by capturing the most beautiful asian ladies in their best shapes, angles, poses, and personalities; with the most appropriate surroundings and/or sceneries. His uses of lighting was awesome and the printing quality was no less impressive.
This book is titled Asian Women and features "oriental" or Southeastern Asian women rather than Indian and every other variation of the continent. I don't see that as anything to complain about. With Black Women, the author/photographer Ommer captured women of many skin tones and features, but did not shoot every type of black woman -- there were few light-skinned women, and none from the U.S. or Europe judging by their surrounding motifs -- yet that book was adored by reviewers who disliked this one. I thought both were very good, but prefer Asian Women simply because I like these photos more for various reasons. If you consider nudes exploitative, or feel that photos of women of color that might appeal to Western males are somehow evil, please seek other types of photography to enjoy and spare yourself the moral qualms. People, Westerners and otherwise, find certain physical characteristics attractive and enjoy admiring and examining them -- even if those characteristics are primarily found among a different ethnicity. Nothing wrong with that as far as I can tell. And it doesn't explain why my wife, a fellow photography enthusiast, also likes this book. So, if you appreciate the following: artistic nude photography (i.e., deft lighting, compostion, posing and yes, *emotion*) with a sensual twist, vibrant colors and beautiful Asian women -- who can be appreciated for any and many reasons that don't include "Western superiority" or exploitation -- than I would very highly recommend this book for you. I agree with the reviewers who likened this to some rare books from the Asahi Press in Japan. Put the political correctness aside and enjoy these photos for whatever reason you want, but be assured that visually they are both technically sound and sensually stirring.
